If I may, I like both for different reasons. I like Tribe because it was my first foray into online community building and I would say it has helped me alot in terms of learning about and learning to enter into discussion about more subjects. I honestly feel that the interactions here have helped me to overcome a lot of the shyness I also have had to figure out what I believe in and what I gravitate to. Myspace initially turned me off, but mainly because I didn't know much about it. Myspace speaks to my creative side in being able to create my own virtual world right there online. It's like creating your own club and then sitting back and seeing who feels your vibe. I have begun to see that for all of the inherent shallowness of Myspace, it is certainly a good tool for helping to manifest what it is you want in your life and what you want it to consist of. I for example, began advertising that I could teach yoga, although I had next to no experience. I was taught by Hari Dass to teach to learn. This is turn pushed me to go out and look more for opportunities to teach. Now, I have my first paying job teaching, having been able to prove both to myself and others that I can indeed do so. Hey, it says it on my Myspace page, right? So it must be true! And the one thing that I have learned about myself over the years is if I want to make sure I am going to do something, I will tell as many people as possible, so then, I HAVE to do it, so I don't look and feel like an idiot and let myself down. This is what I mean by the manifest spirit of Myspace. I love seeing what people project and what it is they want to get across in that projection. IMHO

I've always been connected through cyberspace. From the first email lists, to the evolution of message boards, then local community PHP message boards. I've always used this median as a means to make contact. I agree with you LaDonna. At first, I was turned off by MySpace. Far too many people to sift though, many of them too young to understand or get what I was there for to begin with. Then you get the numerous of others who approach you without a clue asking you to just be another number on their list. It was nice to be able to connect truly on a global level with ease. But at the same time it felt very impersonal.

Tribe on the other hand is much more of a conversational piece than just a bulletin or mass-media presentation. I think it's basic profile and format delivers it to be a bit more personal. I use MySpace to promote my music and art. I use it as a mass promotional tool. Very rarely, if ever, can I embark on a decent conversation (ranging from sex to music production techniques) with people on MySpace. This is something that I can reserve for Tribe.net and get decent responses or opinions.

I guess the big difference (for me, at least) is that Tribe focuses on the conversations and topic brought up by those with interest in those topics. MySpace is much more self-indulgent. It's very much about MY-self on MY-space. Add me. Comment my pix. Look at what I have. Look at what I'm doing. Mass bulletin advertising about MY life. I'm certainly not saying that it's bad. I just think that the purpose is different.

I don't claim that one is better than the other. If Tribe.net allowed me to be more mass advertising of my wares in a creative matter, then I wouldn't need MySpace. But then the feel of Tribe would be lost. I come to one site for one thing and the other for something completely different.

<<Tribe on the other hand is much more of a conversational piece than just a bulletin or mass-media presentation.>>

I agree. myspace, for me, is a place where I got back in touch with a lot of high school and college friends and I praise it for that because now I can keep in touch with what's happening to all those people in my life. before I got married and was planning it all, it was perfect to get up-to-date addresses too.

however, I definitely go on tribe a lot more because of the community aspect. I too advertised a lot of my yoga classes on tribe and got more responses as with myspace i got zero. but I got a chance to network with other yoga teachers and connect with them on a professional level and received a lot of great advice and support. So I definitely don't think either is better or worse. it depends on what you want.
